| The
Visconti-Sfroza Tarot Deck circa
1440 to 1470 AD |
There
is much mystery regarding the tarot and it’s origins. Some
of what is said is true, some of it speculation and some of it false.
Below is just a small segment of tarot history. If this is an area
of interest to you we encourage you to explore it further.
The
Tarot is a deck of cards that began to become popular over 500 years
ago in northern Italy in the early 15th century. The word Tarot
seems to come from the old Italian word “tarocchi” which
means Triumph, and is also the root of the English word “Trump”.
However the earliest known term to describe the Tarot pack was “cartes
da trionfi” or cards of triumph in the year 1442. As the popularity
of the playing cards began to grow, the deck was later adopted as
a tool for divination. Tarot symbolism of this time was deeply rooted
in Medieval and Renaissance Europe.
Since
that time, the Tarot has been the source of much speculation, at
various times attributed to the Ancient Egyptians, East Indians,
the Crusaders, the Gypsies (which some believe are the remnants
of the Ancient Egyptian culture) and the Kabbalah at various times
by various groups. As mentioned, the oldest surviving Tarot deck
dates to the early 15th century, and playing cards of any type are
only perhaps a century or so older.
Today,
the Tarot is widely known, and is one of the most popular tools
for spiritual insight in Western culture.
There
are 78 cards in a Tarot deck, and they represent all elements of
life. The Major Arcana consisting of 22 cards also known as "Greater
Secrets" bring forth insights from a deeper more spiritual
realm, and the minor Arcana with 56 cards also known as "Lesser
Secrets" dealing with every day situations. The minor arcana
is broken down in to 4 suits wands cups swords and pentacles which
correlate to modern day playing cards clubs hearts swords and diamonds.
Within
the cards we can find every emotion we might experience and every
lesson that needs to be learned. From the fools journey right through
to the world card including the earthly lessons held within the
minor arcana.
Working
with the Tarot will confirm and bring to the surface things you've
always known but may have held within your subconscious. Tarot can
bring a new perspective to a question or problem for which you have
been looking for an answer by giving you a better understanding
of what your choices are, and what direction it is best for you
to take.
It
is important to realize that the tarot is not really meant to predict
the future, because no one can do that with any real certainty.
It is meant to show us that we are not passive in our own lives
but that we are active participants in creating our own future.
